Punk Rock Thursday

It’s punk rock Thursday. “I’m hating life,” sniffed Brian, 28, a North Park local and regular at the Turquoise room at the Aztec Bowl. “Punk is adolescent, abusive, aberrant behavior.”

Nevertheless, there are a hundred others who have taken to Anarchy at the Alley, a mixture of bowling and punk rock, held Thursdays at Aztec Bowl in North Park. The lights are dimmed over lanes as a DJ spins classic punk records (noticeably missing: “Take the Skinheads Bowling” by Camper Van Beethoven and “Bowling with Bedrock Barnie” by the Dickies).

Last Thursday punkers were bowling for trophies that had been customized with Day-Glo Mohawks. “Any band would want to do this,” said Roman of the Mites, a local band who played the alley’s Turquoise Lounge.

Lucky DeLavergne has been a punk rocker for 20 years. He is one of the three promoters of Anarchy in the Alley, which started in July. “Punk rockers and car club people were coming to this bowling alley anyway. The lounge looks like Pulp Fiction could have been filmed there.”

DeLavergne says a fight in the parking lot the Thursday before led to a 21-and-up policy. “We got rid of the gutter punks.… All they do is drink, panhandle, and fight.”

Now in his 30s, DeLavergne noted that punk rock bowling could have never happened before. “This would have been a blood bath.”

“I think the people take their aggression out on the pins,” said Rob Noxious of the Shitgivits, who have also played the lounge.

Anarchy in the Alley, 10 p.m. tonight at Aztec Bowl, 4356 30th St., San Diego (619-283-3135).
