Cut out “Love.” Why would anyone want to tack a happy ending onto the tail of Endless Love? Director-screenwriter Shana Feste and co-scripter Joshua Safran deserve a life sentence on The Lifetime Channel for their bowdlerization of Scott Spencer’s intense novel about a mental patient who spends 10 years of his life bouncing in and out of jail and psychiatric hospitals for stalking a 10th grade crush. Drain our lead (hewn brooder, Alex Pettyfer) of all signs of delirium and there’s nothing left but a routine fight to the finish between good (Pettyfer) and evil (over-protective parental zealot Bruce Greenwood) for the hand of daddy’s little girl (the keenly tame Gabriella Wilde). A musical interlude and maudlin backstory concerning a dead relative only help to prolong the everlastingness. Robert Patrick stands out as Pettyfer’s hip old man and upscale Greenwood’s blue collar counterpart. (2014) — Scott Marks
