“I write songs about love lost, love found, and anything else I form opinions about on the road of life,” says acoustic singer/songwriter Jessica Hull.

Asked about her songwriting process, she says “Usually I get a concept while I’m driving, with one lyric or one melody line. I’ll sing it into my iPhone and then build the song around that. I wrote ‘Ray of Light’ on the way to the hospital to see my Grandpa Ray. Words first, then music.”

Hull’s debut full-length was released in December 2012, giving her plenty of gigging material, even if live performances are sometimes less than joyous. “I was playing an intimate, acoustic venue in San Diego, to maybe twelve people, and one of my friends was just passing by, saw me through the window, and I waved at him in between strumming. Naturally he walked in. He was stopped by the doorman and asked to pay the cover, but he had no cash. So I watched him shrug at me and then leave the venue hanging his head. I was livid. I wish I would have stopped my song and told the doorman that I'd cover my friend, but I felt stuck.”
